If you’re looking for a fun and free event this Tuesday evening, stop by Branscomb Auditorium at Florida Southern College to listen to many of Polk County’s best young band musicians. The bands are comprised students chosen from auditions by grade. Starting at 7:30 pm three bands will perform: 7-8 grade, 9-10 grade and 11-12 grade.
We made some major behind the scenes changes to The Arts in Lakeland. You may notice some slight differences and changes over the next few days as we track down bugs. Sorry for any confusion.

Another tip from Lakeland Local photographer Tom Hagerty informs us that popular Lakeland band Fat Clemenza (embedded music alert!) is playing tonight and tomorrow night at Ybor Cigar and Spirits. The club/smoking bar is at 5263 South Florida Ave. in the Lakeland South Center (near Outback).

Eric Darius and his band will perform a free holiday show December 19 at the Lake Mirror amphitheater. The 6 pm to 8 pm show is open to all ages. Parking is available at the Lake Mirror Center and the Iowa Street Parking Garage. Food and drink vendors will be on hand.

Kids Tag Art is a fundraising project for Polk County school art programs that features art from area fifth grade students. Following teacher set guidelines, Polk County 5th graders design auto specialty tags. This year there were over 4200 entries and 134 received the 2008 Awards of Distinction. Those winning entries were made into plastic specialty car tags and placed for sale at the Polk County Tax Collector’s website.
Tags can be purchased for $15 with all proceeds used to purchase classroom art supplies. The 134 award winning designs are on sale through the 2009 school year. However, to receive the tags for Christmas, parents and others must order from the winning designs until December 10th.
In the program’s first two years, over 220 plastic auto tags were sold to raise $30,000 for Polk County elementary school art programs.
In addition to the online display, the winning entries will travel the county on the 2008 Kids Tag Art Mobile, and featured in a 2009 calendar.
The Kids Art Tag program started in 2006 as an outreach program sponsored by the Polk County Tax Collector’s Office. This year the are joined by co-sponsors Central Florida Eurocars, Douglass Screen Printers, Polk County Schools, Junior Women’s Club of Lakeland, Polk Museum of Art, and the Ridge Art Association. Just a couple of miles off I-75 on Highway 54 is Barnie’s Coffee and Tea of Lutz, Florida. It’s about a 50 minute drive from downtown Lakeland.
Now, don’t try to guess where I’m going. This isn’t a call to drive to a coffee shop 40 miles away when we have Black and Brew and Mitchells. (Even though I can’t get either to sell me iced tea at 7:30 am.)

Noel Rosa is playing live this Saturday the 29th from about 6:30 to 9 pm. Rosa is a local singer/songwriter who happens to play an amazing guitar. Here’s a clip:
I interviewed Rosa for an article due in January and had the opportunity to hear him play one of his new signature guitars. A wonderful sound from a new style instrument inspired by Rosa’s spine injury. A debilitating injury that kept him from touring for two years.
Recently was cleared to tour again, Rosa has a new EP and has spent the last three weeks traversing Maine. He’s now looking forward to playing close to home.
Rosa first made his name in the Christian Contemporary field (mp3 sample), but his new work is taking the artist into the adult contemporary singer/songwriter arena. So, if you’ve never heard Rosa play before, you’re in for a new treat. If you’ve heard him play, you’ve not heard the new Noel Rosa.
