Southeastern University Presents the Operetta Die Fledermaus by Johann Strauss

March 20th, 2009 2:16 pm | by Lorrie Delk Walker

Southeastern University presents Die Fledermaus, an operetta by Johann Strauss, at the Polk Theatre.

Die Fledermaus, which means “The Bat,” is a humorous story of revenge filled with rich and memorable melodies, said Edward Bryant, assistant professor of music at Southeastern.

The operetta features Dr. Falke, a prominent lawyer in Vienna who seeks revenge on his wealthy friend, Herr Gabriel Eisenstein, for a past joke that Eisenstein played on him.

This, coupled with the fact that Eisenstein, a womanizer, is married to Rosalinde, the woman Dr. Falke always has loved, and the stage is set and ripe for payback.

When the show begins, Herr Eisenstein is bound for an eight day jail sentence. On the eve his incarceration, Falke invites Eisenstein to a party hosted by a young Russian prince for all of the best people in Vienna. Unbeknownst to Eisenstein, Falke has also invited Rosalinde, their maid Adele, and the governor of the local jail to the party. It is at the party that Dr. Falke intends to exact his revenge.

Die Fledermaus will be performed at the Polk Theatre in downtown Lakeland on April 3rd and 4th at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $12 for adults and $7 for seniors and students with ID.
